Exhibiting at the Royal Horticultural Society
October 26, 2013

The annual juried exhibits of the Royal Horticultural Society in England and the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society in Scotland are a highlight in the careers of those botanical artists who are selected to exhibit. Several artists from the Great River Chapter have been so honored.

On Saturday, October 26, eighteen GRC members gathered at the Longfellow House in Minneapolis for a presentation on the process and experience of participating in these exhibitions. Marilyn Garber opened the session with a brief history of the RHS, which was founded in the 1820s. The exhibits have been held annually since the 1960s.

Three panelists, Nancy Gehrig, Denise Walser-Kolar, and Kathy Creger, brought slides and artifacts, including original art, packing materials, labels and awards, to share with the group.

Nancy described the application process: Four pieces are submitted for assessment (the next deadline is June 24, 2014). If the work is deemed “suitable”, an invitation is extended to exhibit, within the next five years, a suite of at least six paintings or drawings on a theme of the artist’s choosing: Nancy, native Minnesota coniferous trees (graphite); Denise, hybrid hazelnut trees (watercolor); and Kathy, orchids (watercolor).

Denise Walser-Kolar shared the experience of transporting artwork to London, hanging the exhibit, meeting with the judges, and attending the opening reception. Medals are awarded: gold, silver, silver-gilt, and bronze. Each of the panelists received an award for her exhibit.

Kathy Creger exhibited in Botanical Images Scotia (BISCOT) in Edinburgh, sponsored by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society. The process and experience is similar to the RHS exhibits, with notable differences as Kathy shared with us. (February 14,2014 is the next deadline for (BISCOT).
